A geological survey conducted by the Geological Wing of the Department of Industries has declared the Shrikhand Hostel building of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) stable, with no signs of displacement or tilting. The survey was initiated after students residing in the hostel reported tremors last year, leading to the evacuation of the building and relocation of students to Dr YS Parmar Hostel.
The survey report recommends several precautionary measures to ensure the hostel’s long-term safety. Key suggestions include safeguarding the slope behind the building to prevent landslides and soil erosion.
A concrete retaining wall has been proposed to enhance slope stability, along with proper drainage systems to prevent water accumulation. The report emphasises the importance of surface and subsurface drains, as well as roof gutter repairs to direct rainwater safely away from the structure.
Additionally, the report suggests reinforcing the slope with soil nails and geotextile materials. Deep-rooted vegetation should be planted to reduce erosion. Long-term maintenance measures, such as regular inspections of walls, columns, beams and foundations, have been recommended to detect cracks, corrosion, or structural wear.
Following the report’s release, Chief Warden Dr. Roshan Lal Zinta held a meeting with representatives from Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Students’ Federation of India (SFI), and National Students’ Union of India (NSUI).
