Iconic Chamba Chaugan closed for maintenance, restoration
The iconic Chamba Chaugan, a hub of cultural and recreational activities, has been temporarily closed for maintenance and restoration. Known for hosting various events, including the internationally celebrated Minjar Fair, political rallies, school and college sports meets and district-level activities, the Chaugan sees extensive use from April to December each year.
All entry points to the Chaugan have been barricaded with barbed wire to prevent unauthorised entry. The administration has warned that any attempt to trespass, including climbing over iron fences, will lead to strict action. Authorities have also appealed to the public to cooperate in maintaining this iconic heritage site.
Chamba Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repswal said to ensure the Chaugan’s lawn remains lush and vibrant, restoration and maintenance work will be undertaken. The Chaugan will remain closed until further notice.
Located in the heart of Chamba city, the Chaugan not only attracts visitors with its historic charm but also serves as a major revenue source. The venue also hosts political events, district- and state-level school and college sports, and other cultural programmes.
During the renowned Minjar Fair held in July and August, the Chaugan becomes a bustling centre of activity, drawing visitors from far and wide and generating substantial revenue for the administration. However, this extensive utilisation takes a toll on the Chaugan’’s condition, necessitating regular upkeep.
However, the heavy footfall from April to December significantly impacts the ground’s condition, necessitating its annual closure from November to April for restoration and maintenance.
