The tourism industry has gained a new dimension: visitors are flocking to the Hamta Pass near Manali to experience the enchanting world of igloos, a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility. These igloos, made entirely of snow, offer a cozy retreat where tourists can sleep on comfortable beds, enjoy hot meals, and sip tea amid the surroundings of breathtaking views of snow-covered mountains. Besides enjoying the picturesque environment, visitors can also indulge in activities like skiing, adding to the thrill of their stay.

The Hamta region, known for its scenic beauty, has transformed into an igloo village, a new attraction drawing tourists from all parts of the country. Located between Hamta and Sethan villages, the area is quickly becoming a sought-after winter destination. Many tourists now book their stay in advance to secure an igloo, which have become a major draw over the past six years since the construction of a road connecting the area.

Local igloo operators like Pawan Negi, Tashi and Vikas, who have been building these winter shelters with hard work and dedication, report a high number of bookings from visitors eager to experience the chill of Himachal’s winter in the warmth of an igloo.

Negi says that this year, around 25 igloos were constructed in the area by people engaged in the promotion of igloo tourism. “It will remain operational until March. The site has even caught the attention of filmmakers and several documentaries have already been shot here, showcasing the unique lifestyle of igloo living,” he adds.

The cost of a night stay in an igloo, including meals and skiing, is Rs 5,500 per person. This relatively affordable rate has further fuelled the interest of tourists coming from different cities. “As igloo tourism continues to grow, it’s not just offering visitors a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of city life but is also creating new employment opportunities in the region, thus benefiting the local community,” says Negi.
