Illegal mining: Nurpur police take action, seize JCB, tipper

In a decisive move against the mining mafia operating in this interstate border region, Nurpur police on Sunday seized a JCB machine and a tipper engaged in illegal mineral extraction from the Chakki rivulet under the jurisdiction of Damtal police station. This action comes despite a statewide blanket ban on mining activity during the monsoon season, effective from July 1 to September 15.

Nurpur Superintendent of Police Ashok Ratan confirmed that the machinery was seized during a raid and two drivers involved in the illegal activity were arrested. The accused have been identified as Suresh Kumar of Kulda Gullian village and Ashok Kumar of Nangal Bhoor in Pathankot district, Punjab. A case has been registered under Sections 303(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 21(1) of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act. Further investigation is ongoing.

SP Ratan revealed that the Nurpur police have registered 11 FIRs related to illegal mining this year so far. In addition, 86 vehicles and excavators have been seized and 419 challans issued against offenders involved in illegal mining activities.

However, questions are being raised about the mining department’s role, as it appears largely indifferent to the persistent menace, despite being the nodal agency responsible for curbing such illegal practices.
