The Paonta Sahib Forest Division has achieved a milestone in its fight against illegal mining activities. Over the past two years, the division has imposed fines amounting to more than Rs 1.03 crore in over 550 cases of illicit mining — a record-breaking achievement for any department in Himachal Pradesh. This year alone, the division realised over Rs 60.5 lakh in penalties, with Rs 9 lakh collected in December, the highest monthly penalty ever imposed.

The success is attributed to the unwavering commitment of the division’s foresters, who conducted extensive field operations, surprise mining raids and round-the-clock vigilance, including late-night checks and nakas. These measures targeted illegal activities involving tractors, trucks, JCBs and tractor-trolleys across the four key ranges of Paonta, Bhagani, Majra and Girinagar. December’s efforts surpassed November’s record of Rs 8.24 lakh.

Divisional Forest Officer Paonta Sahib, Aishwarya Raj, emphasised the division’s commitment to protecting the region’s natural resources. He stated, “The total penalty realised since 2023 exceeds Rs 1.03 crore in more than 550 cases. This is the highest ever achieved by any department in the state and reflects our dedication to upholding environmental conservation laws.”
