Young BJP woman leader Indu Goswami is the party’s Rajya Sabha candidate from lone seat in Himachal. She will file her nomination tomorrow and is likely to be elected unopposed as numbers are heavily tilted in her favour.

The ruling BJP has 44 members in 68-member House while the Congress has 21 members, followed by Independents (2) and CPM one. The seat is falling vacant following the expiry of term of Congress member Viplove Thakur on April 2.

The former president of the Himachal Pradesh Mahila Morcha quit the post in July last year. She also contested the Assembly elections in 2017 from Palampur but did not win. She also remained chairperson of the State Women Commission Himachal Pradesh from 1998-2000 and chairperson of the State Social Welfare Board Himachal Pradesh from 2000-2003.

At present, she is the Director, Parmarth International School – Baijnath, in Kangra district besides being Director, Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (Government of India). She has also been associated with NGO Gyan Pravah since 1998. The NGO helps women in solving marital disputes, provides legal support to needy women and gives financial support to girl child for education.

Born on April 12, 1967, Goswami has been associated with the party for 35 years and held several posts, including BJP Mandal Mahila Morcha president, BJYM district vice-president, BJYM state secretary and vice-president, state general secretary of the BJP Mahila Morcha, member of BJP state executive and state secretary.

Indu Goswami will be the eighth woman from Himachal to be elected to the Rajya Sabha. Of the eight women leaders elected to the Rajya Sabha, Viplove Thakur of Congress had the distinction of being elected twice to the Upper House.
