The Inter-College Badminton Competition for Men was inaugurated by Shimla (Urban) MLA Hairsh Janartha at the Centre of Excellence in Education, Government College, Sanjauli, here today.

Mayor Surendra Chauhan; Councillors Ankush Verma and Mamta Chauhan; PTA Head Shashi Shekhar Chinu; RKMV, Shimla, Principal Dr Anurita Saxena; and Rajiv Gandhi Mahavidyalaya, Chaura Maidan, Principal Dr Gopal Chauhan were among those present at the event.

Teams from 44 colleges of the state are participating in the competition.

Janartha talked about the role of sports in student life and said such competitions kept students away from social evils such as drug addiction.

He congratulated the principal for organising the competition. Keeping in mind the time limit, the college is organising matches under the competition at two places simultaneously. Some matches are being held at the college auditorium, while others are being held at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex.

The competition is set to conclude on October 25. In the first-day matches, Indora Mahavidyalaya defeated Rai, Paonta Sahib defeated Sujanpur, Jogindernagar defeated Thural, Palampur defeated Ramsar, UILS defeated Bhoranj, Regional Center Dharamshala defeated Gada Gushaini, Solan defeated Kota Behar, Nahan defeated Nagrota Bhagwan and Mandi defeated UIT, Shimla.
