The Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Department has introduced an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) at the inter-state checkpoint in Kala Amb, located on the Himachal Pradesh-Haryana border. This advanced system is designed to monitor and penalise traffic violations effectively, leveraging cutting-edge surveillance technology.

According to Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Rakesh Verma, the ITMS employs high-density CCTV cameras to monitor vehicle movement and record violations in real time. The system is linked to the department’s control room, which automatically processes data and initiates actions against offenders. Verma highlighted that the system has significantly enhanced the ability to enforce traffic regulations, with around a dozen e-challans issued daily for violations such as expired taxes, invalid pollution certificates and insurance lapses.

Installed last month, the ITMS at the National Highway 7 checkpoint consists of six CCTV cameras. These cameras are strategically placed to monitor and document vehicle activities. The technology ensures seamless documentation of traffic violations, enabling swift and accurate enforcement.

The ITMS has proven effective in identifying offenders and improving compliance with road safety norms. It has also flagged vehicles with overdue taxes and missing certifications, ensuring greater accountability. The automated nature of the system eliminates manual intervention, promoting transparency.

This initiative aligns with the government’s objective of enhancing road safety and streamlining traffic management. As Kala Amb is both an industrial hub and a critical transit point, the ITMS is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce accidents.

The successful deployment of the ITMS at Kala Amb could pave the way for similar systems at other checkpoints across Himachal Pradesh. This move reflects the government’s commitment to utilising technology for governance and public safety. With its continued implementation, the ITMS is set to bring significant improvements in traffic management and inspire other states to adopt similar solutions.
