International conference on forensic science, law at HPNLU

The Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla, through its Centre for Criminology and Forensic Science (CCFS), hosted an international conference on the theme “Role of forensic science in criminal investigation: Contemporary issues and challenges.” The event brought together prominent national and international experts in forensic science and law for an in-depth academic exchange.

Distinguished participants included Prof (Dr) Devinder Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Dr BR Ambedkar National Law University, Sonepat; Anup Kumar Ratan, Advocate General of Himachal Pradesh; Prof (Dr) Arun Sharma from NFSU, Uganda; Prof (Dr) Purvi Pokhriyal from National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU); Prof (Dr) Meenakshi Mahajan, Director, Forensic Services, Shimla; and Lisa Ragaza, Adjunct Faculty at the University of New Haven, US.

The inaugural session began with an insightful keynote address by Lisa Ragaza, who spoke in detail about firearm evidence and the complex legal challenges associated with it. This was followed by a presentation by Prof (Dr) Meenakshi Mahajan, who offered a comprehensive overview of forensic science from both academic and practical standpoints, emphasising the critical role of building public trust in forensic processes.

Chief guest Prof (Dr) Purvi Pokhriyal, speaking virtually, delivered a compelling address on the intersection of law, science and the evolving criminal justice system, underscoring the growing importance of forensic sciences in modern legal contexts.

The conference comprised 10 thematic technical sessions, which covered a range of subjects including digital forensics, narco-analysis, brain mapping, cybercrime, criminal profiling and the impact of emerging technologies on forensic investigations. Over seventy delegates — including academicians, researchers, practitioners and students — participated actively, contributing to a vibrant and interdisciplinary academic dialogue.

Speaking at the event, Advocate General Anup Kumar Ratan highlighted the legal significance of forensic evidence in shaping courtroom narratives and aiding the justice delivery system. Providing a global perspective, Prof (Dr) Arun Sharma discussed international innovations and best practices in forensic science. To mark the occasion, HPNLU also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Himachal Pradesh Directorate of Forensic Services, paving the way for future collaboration in training, research and forensic capacity building.

The conference proved to be a significant step toward strengthening the forensic science ecosystem in India and enhancing the synergy between law and science in criminal investigations.
