Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur today welcomed the approval of the ‘One nation, one election’ proposal by the Union Cabinet, terming it as a revolutionary step.
Thakur, in a statement issued here, said, “One nation, one election is the need of the hour to strengthen democracy in the country and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has done it.”
He said that the holding of simultaneous elections would prevent delay in the execution of development works due to the imposition of the model code of conduct for elections. “The decision will also help in reducing election-related expenses, which can then be spent more productively on development works,” he added.
Thakur said that only a strong leader like Narendra Modi could have taken such a bold decision. He thanked the central party leadership, including the Prime Minister, Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president and Health Minister JP Nadda, for this historic decision.
“This will not be the first time that all elections will be held simultaneously in the country. When the Constitution came into force on January 26, 1950, elections were held simultaneously in the country. The first Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections were held simultaneously in 1951-1952,” he said. This practice continued in the subsequent three Lok Sabha elections until 1967, he added.
