A second year civil engineering student of the Jaypee University of Information Technology alleged that he was beaten up by his seniors on the campus last evening.
The victim, Madhvender Singh, said three to four fourth year students, who were under the influence of liquor, assaulted him for resisting ragging.
“There are 40 to 50 guards on the campus and when the incident took place some students and faculty members were also sitting in the café, but no one intervened,” said a student of second year.
He said what was the use of filling in anti-ragging forms when the students were subjected to all this.
A few days ago, there was a scuffle between the fourth year and second year students while they were partying at Euthopia and one of the second year students had suffered injuries.
Second year students alleged that the seniors were ragging them and when they resisted, the scuffle ensued. A complaint has been lodged with the police.
Registrar of the university Rakesh Bassi said the incident had come to his notice and the victim, a day scholar, was immediately given first-aid at the university dispensary. He was later referred to the IGMC, Shimla.
“A committee has been constituted to look into the matter, statements of eyewitness is being recorded and CCTV footage is being scanned to identify the students. The committee will submit its report within 48 hours, following which action will be taken,” he added.
