J&K students visit Himachal

As part of the Army’s initiative to give students from disturbed areas an exposure to the mainland, a group of 30 undergraduate and postgraduate students from Jammu and Kashmir, sponsored under a four-day ‘Confidence Building Tour’, visited Himachal from February 15 to 18. They were taken to Himalayan Nature Park, Summer Hill University Campus, Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Tattapani Hot Spring and Army Heritage Museum. The students also met Lieutenant General Atulya Solankey, Chief of Staff, Headquarters, Army Training Command. The officer gave a historical perspective of Shimla and interacted on topics of national integration and development. He encouraged students to broaden their horizons and evolve as responsible citizens of the country.

Workshop on diseases

The Department of Health and Family Welfare organised a three-day training workshop for medical officers in management and screening of non-communicable diseases at the local Bhuri Singh Museum. As many as 23 medical officers are participating in the workshop. District Program Officer Dr Harit Puri said non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and stroke accounted for 53 per cent of the total deaths in India. The state government had launched the Mukhyamantri Nirog Yojana, in which all the people above the age of 18 would be screened for non-communicable diseases and the status would be digitised on the health card app. He said each year, accredited social health activists would go door to door to screen people above 18 years of age.

Athletics meet at school

An athletics meet for students of kindergarten was organised at Him Academy Public School on Tuesday. Games, including frog race, one-leg race, simple race and long jump were organised on the occasion. Chander Prabha Lakhanpal, chairperson of the school, said sports inculcated habits of discipline and competition among students. She encouraged students to participate in extra-curricular activities.

90 students get laptops

As many as 90 meritorious students from Haroli subdivision in Una district were given laptops under a scheme of the state government. Himachal Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation Limited vice-chairman Ram Kumar distributed the laptops. He called upon students to utilise their time to gain knowledge and hone up their skills in all fields. He also advised them to be disciplined in life and keep away from social evils. He said in the era of information technology, the laptops would be a source of valuable information.
