Journalism plays vital role in strengthening governance: Speaker
Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania emphasised the crucial role of journalism in strengthening governance while addressing a gathering at the historic Gaiety Theatre. The event was organised by the National Executive Committee of the Indian Media Journalists Association.
Pathania highlighted that a strong governance system is essential for the growth of both the state and nation. He acknowledged journalism’s significant contribution to the country’s history and development, stating that Indian democracy stands on four pillars: the judiciary, the executive, the legislature, and the media. While the first three institutions oversee governance within their respective domains, he noted, it is the media that holds all three accountable.
“Journalism ensures that those entrusted with constitutional responsibilities remain informed and transparent in their functioning,” Pathania said. “It is the media that highlights shortcomings in the system, pushing for necessary reforms.”
He further recognised the dedication of journalists, who spend their lives serving society through their work. Stressing the need for their welfare, he stated that social security, pensions, and medical assistance should be provided to journalists. Pathania revealed that he had personally discussed this matter with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and expressed hope that necessary decisions would be made soon.
Bala Bhaskar, National President of the Indian Media Journalists Association, acknowledged journalism’s immense contribution to society and the unique challenges faced by journalists in different states.
He stressed the importance of addressing these issues at both state and national levels.
Meanwhile, Gyaneshwar, president of the Bihar State Chapter, called for journalism to be granted constitutional status to ensure its independence from external influence.
Welcoming journalists from various states, Kameshwar Sharma, state president of Himachal Pradesh, highlighted the difficulties faced by journalists due to the state’s vast and challenging geography.
