Her remarkable efforts were recently recognised when the Technical Education, Town and Country Planning Minister, Rajesh Dharmani, honoured her on Republic Day for setting up the state’s first science park at Government High School, Khararhatti.

Recalling her tenure at GHS Khararhatti, Mamta shared how she aimed to develop scientific curiosity among students. Arriving at the school in December 2021, she observed that mathematics and science created fear among students. Determined to make these subjects engaging, she reviewed the syllabus for classes VI to X and identified topics that could spark interest.

Over six months, Mamta transformed discarded wooden furniture and other waste materials into vibrant models illustrating geometry formulas, science concepts like the solar system and probability and formulas for common gases such as methane and ethane.

These models were displayed on a vacant patch of school ground, which became the state’s first science park. The bright and colourful exhibits drew students during their free time, enabling them to learn effortlessly. Mamta also created a birdhouse from waste materials, which attracted birds and encouraged students to care for them by providing food and water.

To further enhance the school’s environment, Mamta planted saplings in painted waste bins, adding greenery to the dull campus. With limited resources, she often funded these projects from her own pocket. Her dedication inspired the school management committee to contribute Rs 100 monthly for school needs.

Mamta’s environmental initiatives extended beyond the campus. She encouraged students to plant and nurture saplings during holidays, rewarding those with the healthiest plants. Additionally, she promoted reading by motivating students to summarise books on handmade cards, with the best entries earning awards.

“I enjoy teaching and participate in all activities, from planting saplings to making models,” Mamta shared. “Fast learners emulate these efforts and showcase their creativity, bringing laurels to the school.” Her innovative approach has created a nurturing environment where students excel academically and develop a sense of responsibility toward nature.

Beyond academics, Mamta advocates for students’ holistic growth. She emphasises staying away from drugs, being compassionate individuals and contributing to environmental conservation. Her passion and commitment have transformed not just the school campus but also the lives of her students, making her a true role model in education.
