Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL) today termed Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut’s claim that she had been handed a monthly bill of Rs 1 lakh for her Manali residence as wrong and misleading.

According to the electricity board, the Rs 90,384 bill was for two months. It claimed that Kangana didn’t pay her bills on time and the connected power load at her residence was 94.82 kW, which is 1,500 per cent more than the normal household.

Kangana, while addressing a public gathering in Mandi on Tuesday, had claimed that she had received a Rs 1 lakh bill for her Manali residence where she didn’t even stay. “They have increased the bus fare, agencies conduct probes on samosa, we hear and read all this and feel embarrassed. I want to say that they are like wolves and we need to rescue the state from their claws,” she had said.

In its clarification, the board said that it was wrong and misleading on the part of Kangana to claim that the power bill was for one month. “In the bill issued to Kangana Ranaut on March 22, the previous unpaid bill of Rs 32,287 has also been included. The total bill for two months amounts to Rs 90,384,” said a board’s spokesperson.

The board claimed that Kangana had not been paying her power bills on time. “The electricity bills of her residence for October, November and December in 2024 amounted to Rs 82,061 and she paid it on January 16,” the spokesperson said. “Similarly, she did not pay the power bills for January and February on time. In January, the power consumed at her residence was around 6,000 units and the bill was for Rs 31,367. The power consumption in February was 9,000 units and the bill was for Rs 58,096, including late payment charges,” he added.

The spokesperson said that the monthly power consumption at Kangana’s residence was quite high, ranging from 5,000 to 9,000 units. “Besides, she is regularly availing of the subsidy given by the state government. She has received Rs 700 subsidy on her February bill,” he added.
