Kangra Deputy Commissioner (DC) Hemraj Bairwa has called for immediate and effective measures to promote the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands in the district. Speaking as the chief guest at a one-day workshop on wetland conservation, held on Tuesday at the Deputy Commissioner’s office auditorium, Bairwa emphasised the crucial role wetlands play in maintaining environmental balance. He highlighted that wetlands purify harmful waste from water and are essential for the water cycle, contributing to water storage, maintaining groundwater levels and improving water quality. Additionally, they provide protection to human populations by absorbing floodwaters.

Bairwa further noted that wetlands are vital in mitigating climate-related events, such as floods and droughts. Beyond their environmental benefits, wetlands offer economic opportunities by supporting industries such as fish farming, makhana cultivation and the harvesting of aquatic plants. He also stressed that wetlands serve as significant carbon sinks, helping to combat climate change.

In Kangra, wetlands like Pong Dam, Kareri and Bada Bhangal have been identified as key areas for conservation and steps are already underway to develop these regions. The DC urged officials to expedite the demarcation of wetland zones, the creation of development plans and water catchment treatment plans to facilitate conservation efforts. He emphasised the need to promote eco-tourism and ensure public participation in wetland conservation.
