Kangra dist steps up efforts for ‘100-day TB-free India’ drive

A review meeting for the ‘100-day TB-free India’ campaign, spearheaded by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, was held at the Dharamshala Hospital auditorium on Saturday. The session, chaired by Kangra Deputy Commissioner (DC) Hemraj Bairwa, focused on the district’s progress and activities under this national initiative aimed at tuberculosis eradication.

During the meeting, DC Bairwa emphasised the critical role of public participation in the success of the campaign. He urged various departments, community representatives, and youth groups to collaborate and work cohesively to achieve TB eradication. He also stressed the need for open discussions to dispel myths surrounding the disease, thereby fostering a better understanding of TB among the public.

The campaign’s awareness initiatives involve rallies, public oaths, and discussions hosted by local representatives, self-help groups, Anganwadi workers, NCC, NSS, Red Ribbon Clubs, and TB survivors. Social media influencers and NGOs are also being engaged to amplify the message.

Asha workers have been entrusted with screening over 2.5 lakh individuals across the district, ensuring that even asymptomatic high-risk individuals undergo mandatory X-ray examinations. This approach is vital as the National TB Survey (2019-2021) revealed that nearly 50 per cent of TB patients in India exhibited no symptoms and were diagnosed only through X-ray tests.

District Health and Tuberculosis Programme Officer Dr Rajesh Sood highlighted that the campaign, launched on December 7, 2024, will culminate on March 24, 2025. He commended the initiative, stating it focuses on identifying and treating the most vulnerable populations.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Rajesh Guleri reported that in 2024, Kangra district detected 3,042 TB cases, achieving 99 per cent of its target. Over the past decade (2015-2023), India has reduced its TB prevalence by 17.7 per cent and TB-related mortality by 21.4 per cent. However, the country still holds the highest number of TB cases globally.

To further support patients, 11,218 nutrition kits have been distributed in the district with assistance from 1,029 Nikshay Mitras. The campaign also aims to make 300 panchayats completely TB-free, underscoring the local government’s commitment to eradication efforts.
