Khaniyara fair begins with traditional festivities

The historic Khaniyara fair in Dharamsala commenced on Friday with the sounds of traditional musical instruments echoing through the valley, marking the beginning of a vibrant celebration of culture, tradition and devotion. Known for its rich tribal heritage, the fair has been a symbol of social and religious unity for generations, bringing together locals to revel in music, dance, cuisine and handicrafts that have been passed down through the ages.

At the heart of the festival is Indu Nag Devta, the revered deity believed to control the rains in the region. Devotees and event organisers, whether for grand occasions like the IPL or the Summer Festival, always seek the blessings of Indu Nag before proceeding with their plans. The “Indru Nag Chhinj Mela,” which began on March 27, is another highlight of the fair, drawing large crowds to this picturesque hilly settlement, once considered the wealthiest panchayat in the state due to its thriving slate mining industry.

The festivities began with a havan-yagna at the Indru Nag temple, followed by the ceremonial offering of the traditional flag of Nag Devta, an age-old religious ritual. The sacred Chhari (symbolic stick of the deity) was then carried out from the temple in a grand procession, accompanied by traditional musical instruments and devotional songs. The procession moved from the main temple to Kotasani Mata Temple before reaching the fairground at Patola, captivating devotees along the way.

One of the most anticipated events of the fair is the traditional Chhinj wrestling competition, where local wrestlers compete, drawing enthusiastic crowds eager to witness the spirited bouts. Food stalls are also a major attraction, offering mouth-watering local delicacies such as jalebi, pakoras, and chaat. On the first day itself, young men and women flocked to these stalls, relishing the flavours of their heritage. Additionally, numerous vendors have set up shops selling handicrafts, toys and traditional goods, giving the fair a lively, bustling marketplace feel.

For centuries, the Khaniyara fair has served as more than just an event — it has been a gathering that strengthens community bonds, fostering cultural pride and social unity. Through shared festivities and traditions, the people continue to keep their heritage alive, ensuring that this legacy endures for generations to come.
