Rampur, August 5
Minister for Revenue, Horticulture, Tribal Development, and Public Grievances Redressal Jagat Singh Negi today said educating daughters was a matter of pride for both parents and the nation.
He was addressing the gathering as the chief guest at the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme at the Government High School ground in Sungra, Nichar development block, Kinnaur district.
Negi said our daughters were our pride, and the daughters of the tribal district of Kinnaur had brought accolades to the state in education and sports at the national and the international levels.
He stressed the importance of educating daughters to provide them with opportunities to progress in life, which would further enhance the state’s and the country’s reputation. This, he said, was crucial for the success of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign.
He talked about state government’s efforts to eradicate female foeticide and provide a better life for girls.
Last year, the incentive for parents of a single girl child under the Indira Gandhi Balika Suraksha Yojana was increased from Rs 35,000 to Rs 2,00,000.
Additionally, parents who opt for family planning after having two daughters were awarded Rs 1,00,000 in a bid to improve the gender ratio, he said.
The minister also talked about the “Beti Hai Anmol” (Daughter is Precious) scheme, which provides Rs 10,000 in scholarships for the first daughter of families living below the poverty line. Financial assistance ranging from Rs 300 to Rs 12,000 is provided for books and uniforms from classes I to XII, and Rs 5,000 for higher education after Class XII.
Negi called upon the public to campaign against social evils to boost girls’ education in rural areas and ensure that they benefit from the various policies and schemes run by the state government.
The event included a speech competition on the theme Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, and cultural programmes by women’s groups to raise awareness about the importance of women’s education. These groups were awarded Rs 10,000 each, and every participant in the speech competition received Rs 5,000.
Earlier, the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Sonam Negi, welcomed the chief guest.
Tribal Advisory Council member Sukhdev Negi; Deputy Director (Primary Education) Kuldeep Negi; Deputy Director (Horticulture) Bhupendra Negi; the District Health Officer, Dr Kaviraj Negi; Congress party officials and workers were among those present at the event.
