Kullu hospital brings advanced hearing test closer to home
Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Nag Raj Pawar has hailed the introduction of the advanced Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) test facility at Kullu Regional Hospital as a milestone in diagnosing and treating hearing-related issues. Operational since October 2024, this cutting-edge technology is already proving to be a game-changer for the local community.
“Since its launch, the BERA facility has provided diagnostic services to around 130 patients, ranging from children to the elderly,” shared Dr Pawar. “It has been especially impactful in detecting hearing impairments in young children, allowing timely and potentially life-changing interventions.”
Before the installation of the BERA machine, patients had to travel long distances to institutions like IGMC Shimla or Tanda Hospital in Kangra for accurate hearing tests. “This not only caused delays in diagnosis and treatment but also placed a significant financial and logistical burden on families,” Dr Pawar explained. “Now, with this facility available locally, those challenges have been removed. Families can access accurate and reliable diagnostic services right here in Kullu.”
Previously, Kullu hospital could only offer Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA), which was not sufficient for detailed hearing assessments. Dr Pawar noted that the long-standing demand for a BERA machine stemmed from this limitation. “Its installation has filled a critical gap, greatly enhancing the quality of care we offer.”
The CMO also credited the successful setup of the BERA facility to the support of the state government and local MLA Sunder Singh Thakur. Located at the District Early Intervention Centre (DEIC), the facility runs through a collaborative effort between Kullu hospital and the Samphia Foundation, a well-known non-governmental organisation. “This partnership reflects a shared commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure in the region,” he said.
Dr Pawar encouraged residents to take advantage of this valuable service. “Anyone experiencing hearing difficulties, regardless of age, should visit Kullu hospital for testing. Early diagnosis is essential for effective treatment and a better quality of life,” he urged.
