Shimla, August 2
The Centre will instal a Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) in Lahaul and Spiti district by December 2025 to help in weather forecasting. This was stated by Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, while responding to a query by Rajya Sabha member Sikander Kumar in Parliament.
“Three X-band Doppler Weather Radars have been installed and made operational at Kufri near Shimla, Murari Devi in Mandi and Jot in Chamba in Himachal Pradesh. The fourth one will start functioning by the year-end,” he stated. Sikander Kumar had sought details of the Doppler Weather Radar systems installed in Himachal Pradesh and the timeframe set for their commissioning. The minister said Rs 13.87 crore had been spent on establishing and smooth operation of DWRs in the state.
He added weather forecasting is done by using data from multiple observation systems. “The data from these observation systems are incorporated into various state-of-the-art regional and global dynamical models to forecast weather at different spatial and temporal scales,” he stated.
He said continuous efforts were being made to achieve better accuracy in weather forecasting across the country.
