A fresh spell of snowfall last night in Lahaul and Spiti district and Manali in Kullu district blocked traffic movement towards Lahaul valley on the Manali-Leh highway. As many as 2,000 vehicles were moved back from Sissu and Koksar areas in Lahaul valley and directed towards Manali by the police last night.
Due to heavy snowfall at North and South portals of Atal tunnel on the Manali-Leh highway, traffic movement has stopped between Manali and Lahaul. It has been snowing in Lahaul and Spiti and higher reaches of Kullu district in Manali and Banjar regions since last evening following which the entire region is in grip of severe cold.
Around 30 cm of snow was recorded near Atal tunnel and the Rohtang Pass area. Similarly, Banjar region and Jalori Pass on the Aut-Luhri highway received heavy snowfall, blocking the highway for traffic.
In Lahaul valley, traffic has been restricted by the administration in view of public safety because the roads have turned slippery for movement of vehicles. Manali town also received fresh snow during the day, which delighted the hoteliers and farmers. Tourists thoroughly enjoyed the snowfall at the Mall in Manali.
In high-altitude areas of Lahaul and Spiti, Kullu and Mandi districts, witnessed fresh snowfall, while lower regions of these districts received rain.
Deputy Commissioner Lahaul and Spiti Rahul Kumar said that traffic movement had come to a halt on the Manali-Leh highway via Atal tunnel after a fresh spell of snowfall. The BRO has engaged its workforce and machinery to clear snow from the road. The DC has urged the area residents and tourists to avoid avoid unnecessary travelling to avert any untoward incident.
