A massive landslide near Chakki Mor on the Parwanoo-Dharampur section of the National Highway (NH)-5 blocked vehicular traffic for over three hours last night. A large amount of muck and big boulders flowed down from the hills around 12:15 am and obstructed the road.
“The private company looking after the maintenance of the highway deputed men and machinery to clear the debr]is. The movement of traffic was restored around 3:30 am though it took another two and a half hours to remove the debris and the boulders,” said Pranav Chauhan, DSP, Parwanoo.
Two of the four lanes of the highway were already closed for traffic owing to recurring landslides, this incident led to the blockade of the entire traffic. This highway leads to the state capital of Shimla and registers an immense influx of vehicles. Being the apple season, a large number of trucks ply on the highway at night. Vehicles were queued up on both sides as the restoration work was underway.
National Highways Authority of India officials, who are executing the road widening work, said that till now a lesser number of landslides had been witnessed compared to the last monsoon when colossal damage was caused due to torrential rains. Meanwhile, men and machines were deputed to meet any such exigency on the highway.
