Landslide-prone slopes of Nigulsari, Nathpa to be stabilised

The Public Works Department (PWD) is trying to stabilise the slopes at the landslide-prone Nigulsari and Nathpa in Kinnaur district. These two points, especially Nigulsari, witnsess frequent landslides that cut off Kinnaur district from the state for many days on the trot. “We are working on a permanent solution to the problem at these two sites. Tenders to stabilise the slopes at these two vulnerable points have been floated, and the technical evaluation of the bids is underway,” said Ajay Kapoor, Chief Engineer, National Highways wing of the PWD.

Kapoor said that two detailed project reports (DPRs) of Rs 54.37 crore had been sanctioned to find a permanent solution to frequent landslides at these points. “We are expecting the work will be completed within a year after it is allotted,” he added.

The Chief Engineer said that the latest techniques would be sued to stabilise the slopes. It may be mentioned that the Nigulsari stretch of the road remained closed for over 10 days due to repeated landslides and shooting stones. It was partially opened for traffic on Wednesday to let stranded vehicles loaded with apple and vegetables ply to market. The closure of the National Highway-05 at Nigulsari not only hampers the transport of fruits and vegetables to market but also poses a constant threat to the lives of commuters. As and when the PWD manages to stabilise the slopes, people going to and fro Kinnaur would heave a sigh of relief.
