Landslides leave Nurpur thirsty

Nurpur town, already reeling under three days of power outages, now finds itself gasping for relief as piped water supply remains disrupted for the third consecutive day. The breakdown of the Chakki Water Supply Scheme, the main lifeline for most households, has left residents in deep distress.

Despite the existence of three supply schemes, Chakki caters to the largest part of Nurpur, making its collapse a civic crisis. The disruption stems from landslides near the Housing Board Colony in Ward No. 2, where the main overhead tank of the Jal Shakti Department (JSD) is located. Massive debris has damaged both the pipelines and the power lines essential to the system.

The havoc hasn’t spared electricity either. Five poles of the 11 kV feeder from Sulilali subdivision were swallowed by the sliding earth near Nakki. Without power, the water scheme stands crippled.

JSD Executive Engineer Anand Baloria assured that “damaged pipelines are being repaired and water supply is expected to be restored by tonight,” while Vikas Thakur, Executive Engineer of the electrical division, confirmed that repair work on power lines will be initiated on Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, frustrated residents, including Pavnesh Gupta, Vivek, Praveen Sangalia, Udhit Gandhi and Hanumati, urged both JSD and HPSEB to recognise the urgency of restoring services for an urban population wholly dependent on piped supply
