The Department of Language and Culture has launched an initiative to grade and classify artistes in Shimla district who are involved in singing, instrumental music, dance, folk theatre and other traditional art forms. This classification aims to provide them with greater opportunities to participate in international, national, state and district-level fairs and festivals. The department has invited applications from interested artistes, with the submission deadline set for February 4.

Shimla District Language Officer Anil Harta emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating that it would help recognise and promote the region’s artistic talent on larger cultural platforms. He urged all eligible artistes to apply and submit their applications in the prescribed format at the department’s office in Kusumpti, Shimla, before the deadline.

Artistes will be assessed and classified based on their performances and achievements. Those who have performed at least seven times in state-level fairs, five times in national fairs or three times in international fairs will be included in the highest category. Similarly, winners or runners-up of popular television shows like Indian Idol and Sa Re Ga Ma will also be placed in this top-tier classification. The second category will include artistes who have won or placed in the Himachal Youth Festival and cultural teams that have participated in international and national events at least three times.

Artistes who have already been classified by Radio, Doordarshan or other government-recognised institutions are not required to undergo this selection process again. However, they must still submit their registration form, along with proof of past participation and a certificate confirming their category from the fair committee. Additionally, they need to provide a passport-sized photograph and a copy of their Aadhar card.

The initiative is expected to bring well-deserved recognition to local artistes and open doors for them in prestigious cultural events, helping preserve and promote Himachal’s rich artistic heritage.
