The Debate, Drama and Literary Society (DDLS) of Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU) recently hosted a screening of the documentary “Nirmool - Rootless Labour.” Produced by HPNLU, the documentary offers a look at the problems faced by migrant labourers in the Shimla district, focusing on their struggles, rights and broader socio-economic challenges.

The screening, organised on the university campus, explored the exploitation and hardships migrant workers endure while striving for dignity and justice in a region that relies heavily on their labour. Through powerful visuals and interviews, the documentary highlighted the workers’ lives, their legal rights and the challenges they face in securing these rights within the local context of Shimla, Himachal Pradesh.

The DDLS chairperson, Dr Mritunjay, introduced the documentary, stressing the importance of understanding migrant labour issues as a critical part of the social justice dialogue. He pointed out the gaps in the legal framework and underscored the need to raise awareness and initiate conversations about migrant workers’ rights.

The event was attended by the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Priti Saxena, who praised the DDLS team for spotlighting such an important issue. In her address, Dr Saxena emphasised Article 23 of the Constitution guarantees the right against forced labour, yet many labour rights cases are pursued through Public Interest Litigations (PILs) rather than by the workers themselves. She called for more advocacy and support to ensure workers’ voices are heard in the judicial system.

Also present at the event was Dr Meenakshi Mahajan, Director of Forensic Services, Himachal Pradesh, who delivered a compelling speech urging students to engage with and learn about the various labour laws that protect workers’ rights. She highlighted the importance of understanding these laws to empower migrant workers and improve their working conditions.
