The Himachal Pradesh Police, under the guidance of DGP Atul Verma, today launched a special campaign against drunken driving in the state. The drive would continue till September 29. This initiative comes following a steep increase in road crashes occurring during late evening hours, specifically between 9 pm and 11.30 pm.

Additional SP (Traffic Tourism and Railways) Narvir Rathour said that the police had diligently analysed road crash and traffic enforcement data, which revealed a concerning rise in incidents linked to drunken driving. “This year alone, the police have recommended the suspension or cancellation of 2,345 driving licences over serious rule violations, including 1,379 licences for driving under the influence of alcohol,” he added.

Meanwhile, the police have recommended the suspension of the licences of 1,379 offenders for driving vehicles under the influence of liquor. The licences have been forwarded to the competent authorities for the necessary action.

“The Himachal Police are committed to using advanced technology to regulate and enforce motor vehicle laws effectively. The police headquarters in Shimla is closely monitoring the road safety enforcement plan and has instructed field personnel to maximise the use of digital devices for traffic enforcement,” said Rathour. “We urge all drivers to prioritise safety and refrain from driving under the influence of liquor. Violators should be prepared to say goodbye to their licences” he added.
