Make policy to check drug abuse, samiti urges govt
The Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti, Shimla, has urged the government to make a concrete policy to check the growing drug abuse and deaths due to it. District secretary Sumitra Chandel said the police were taking action against drug abuse and arresting drug smugglers, but efforts also needed to be made to reduce the demand for drugs along with destroying the supply chain.
Chandel said the Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti would organise a rally in Shimla on March 8, International Women’s Day, to make an appeal to chemists to not sell any drug without the prescription of a doctor.
The committee also expressed concern over the involvement of government officials, doctors and employees in drug smuggling. State secretary Satyavan Pundir said every link related to this serious matter should be thoroughly investigated. Pundir said if the officials of the same department which has the responsibility to save the society from drug abuse get involved in drug smuggling, then the government and administration should take it seriously.
“Social organisations and panchayats coming forward to stop drug abuse will be discouraged by such incidents,” he said. He further said that government would have to make a comprehensive and effective policy to end drug abuse. “The government needs to run a comprehensive campaign against drug abuse by involving public representatives, citizens and community,” he said.
