Former Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Shanta Kumar emphasised the need for incorporation of stringent provisions in the law to deal with crimes against women, while talking to reporters at his residence today evening.
“There is a need for more fast track courts in the country,” he said. He quoted a number of recent incidents reported in the country in the past few months.
“Crimes against women, particularly minor girls, is a matter of concern. The institutions responsible for law enforcement and dispensing justice should be made strong and answerable. The process of investigation should also be fast-tracked. New strategies and interventions should be devised to deal with the rising graph of crime against women,” said Shanta.
He said as per the National Crime Records Bureau, the overall conviction rate for all crimes is 50 per cent, while for rape cases it is only 27 per cent.
As compared to men, women are targeted more by criminals, and they get justice rarely.
He said he had written a letter to the Chief Minister and advocated for stringent laws and speedy investigations.
He said he had asked the state government to set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for the reinvestigation of Gudia rape-murder case. He said it was a shame for the system, as premier investigation agencies like CBI and the state police failed to reach the logical end in Gudia murder-rape case.
