Man gets six-month jail in illicit liquor case

Shashikant, Judicial Magistrate (First Class), Jawali in Kangra district, on Friday convicted Ravi Kumar, a resident of Banal village in Fatehpur, of carrying illicit liquor and sentenced him to six months’ jail and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him.

As per the Assistant District Attorney (ADA), Jawali, who had contested the case on the behalf of the government, a Fatehpur police team during patrolling on the morning of January 27, 2018, had spotted Ravi near the local Banal khad with a plastic can filled with illicit liquor. On seeing the police team, he ran away but was chased and nabbed.

The police recovered five litres of illicit liquor (being carried in a plastic can) from his possession. The accused failed to produce any legal document for the transportation of the seized liquor. A case under the Excise Act was registered at the Fatehpur police station. He was already facing a number of such cases under the Excise Act.
