Manali gets tough on trash, Rs 19K collected in fines under drive
Under the “Swachh Manali, Sundar Manali” campaign, the Manali Municipal Council (MC) has intensified its efforts to curb improper disposal of waste. Recently, the MC challaned 21 offenders and collected a penalty of Rs 19,000 for littering at dumping sites or in open spaces.
The MC team conducted surprise inspections across the city, uncovering cases where garbage was strewn outside designated areas at the dumping site. Immediate action was taken, with violators fined on the spot and educated about proper waste disposal.
To further discourage littering, the MC has introduced Rs 1,000 fine for each violation, aiming to preserve Manali’s scenic beauty. Even CCTV cameras have been installed at key locations to monitor compliance.
MC president Manoj Larje emphasised that cleanliness and environmental preservation were as crucial as development. He said strict measures would continue, with fines potentially increasing to Rs 2,000 for habitual offenders.
Larje urged citizens to dispose of waste in designated bins, highlighting the responsibility of residents and tourists in maintaining Manali’s charm. In a bid to enhance Manali’s appeal, the MC has launched a special initiative to strengthen sanitation, beautify public spaces and expand greenery.
Larje said the city-wide tree plantations were underway. Additionally, new designer dustbins have been installed along Mall Road, each costing approximately Rs 70,000. Currently, six dustbins have been placed in Manali’s main markets.
