Mandi, July 13
Lahaul residents today constituted the Lahaul Spiti Ekta Manch to unitedly oppose the decision of the state government to set up power projects in the basin of the Chenab.
They elected advocate Sudarshan Jaspa as the president of manch, while Rigzin Samphel Heyreppa was made coordinator to mobilise people to oppose the power projects in the tribal district.
The residents had earlier constituted committees at the village level for the purpose. Now, all these committees had been merged into the Lahaul Spiti Ekta Manch to oppose the government decision in the coming days.
Heyreppa said that this region is ecologically fragile and power projects, if set up, would bring doom for local residents.
“The Himachal Government has allocated several power projects in the Chenab basin to prominent companies such as the SJVNL, NHPC, HPCL and the NTPC. Besides, several hydropower projects are being planned at Tandi, Rashil, Bardang, Miyar and Jispa in Lahaul and Spiti district,” he added.
