Mandi district steps up anti-drug campaign with volunteer training
50 youth trained under Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan as officials urge public vigilance
A district-level Master Volunteers Training Programme was organised on Thursday under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan by the District Welfare Department, Mandi. The event, held at the Conference Hall of the District Welfare Officer’s office, was presided over by Deputy Commissioner Mandi, Apoorv Devgan.
Addressing participants, the DC said the primary objective of the training was to strengthen anti-drug activities and equip Master Volunteers with practical knowledge, essential skills and clear guidelines. This, he noted, would enable them to effectively advance the drug-free campaign at the grassroots level. He said the Chief Minister has launched an intensive anti-chitta awareness drive across the state and Mandi district is implementing it with strong momentum. A total of 50 young men and women from across the district took part in the programme.
The DC said strict action is being taken against suppliers and consumers of ‘chitta’ and other narcotic substances. He added that the district administration, police, various departments and organisations are working collectively to eliminate drug abuse from the region. Trained volunteers, he said, would play a crucial role in spreading awareness, keeping youth away from substance abuse and helping communities access support services.
During the training, Dr Pavnesh from the Health Department provided insights into the current status of drug addiction, its psychological impacts and associated health problems. Pankaj Pandit, an expert from the organisation Gunjan, discussed the national and district context of drug eradication, the role of Master Volunteers and the fundamentals of counselling. Ruchika, Field Officer for the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, outlined the campaign’s components, operational methods and implementation strategies.
District Welfare Officer Sameer welcomed participants, while District Programme Officer Ajay Badrel and other officials were also present.
Deputy Commissioner Devgan urged citizens to support the ongoing anti-drug movement. He called on residents in both rural and urban areas to report any suspicious individuals or activities related to drug trafficking. Information can be shared confidentially via the DC office email or the SP Mandi office WhatsApp number. He said the identity of informants would remain protected.
Emphasising community-driven vigilance, he encouraged citizens to request intensified patrolling, raids or special monitoring whenever needed, reaffirming public participation is essential to achieving a drug-free Mandi.
