Mandi’s bravehearts: Two Vallabh Government College cadets shine
Two cadets from Vallabh Government College, Mandi, have been commissioned as Lieutenants in the Indian Army after successfully completing their training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai. Senior Under Officer Pankaj Kumar and Cadet Warrant Officer Vinay Thakur, both from the NCC Air Wing, earned their ranks during the prestigious passing out parade, marking the culmination of their rigorous training.
Flying Officer Dr Chaman, an NCC officer at the college, revealed that both officers were former students and cadets of the Himachal Pradesh Air Squadron NCC. Their achievement has brought immense pride to their alma mater and the NCC fraternity.
Lieutenant Vinay Thakur’s inspiring journey
Vinay Thakur, originally from Bijani village near Mandi, overcame significant hardships to achieve his dream. Raised in Goa, where his father worked as a restaurant manager, Vinay faced adversity when his father, Surender Kumar, passed away at a young age. This placed immense responsibility on him, but he remained determined to serve in the armed forces.
While preparing for defense exams, Vinay took up various jobs to support his family. His perseverance and dedication paid off when he was selected for training at OTA Chennai. Now commissioned as a Lieutenant, he will serve in the Military Intelligence branch of the Indian Army.
“I have achieved my goal through hard work and the blessings of my parents and mentors,” Vinay expressed. He credited much of his success to the guidance of Flying Officer Dr. Chaman, who played a crucial role in motivating and training him. His sister, Nikita Thakur, who was also part of the NCC Air Wing, shares in the pride of his achievement.
Lieutenant Pankaj Kumar’s road to success
Pankaj Kumar, another bright cadet from Vallabh Government College, has also realised his lifelong dream of joining the Indian Army. A former Senior Under Officer in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Pankaj has been commissioned into the prestigious Guards Regiment.
Hailing from the Kortmoras Dhooma Devi area near Mandi, Pankaj is the son of Diwan Thakur, a respected social worker, farmer, and horticulturist. He expressed deep gratitude for the support and mentorship of Flying Officer Dr. Chaman, along with his parents and teachers. “I owe my success to my mentors and the constant encouragement of my family,” he said.
A moment of pride for Vallabh Govt College
The commissioning of Vinay Thakur and Pankaj Kumar has been a moment of celebration for Vallabh Government College and the NCC Air Squadron. Principal Professor Surina Sharma, along with Flying Officers Dr Chaman and Nishchal Sharma, extended their heartfelt congratulations.
Commanding Officer Kunal Sharma of the Himachal Pradesh Air Squadron NCC Kullu, Lieutenant Colonel Narayan Das, and faculty members Dr Balbir Singh and Dr Kavita also praised the young officers.
Their success underscores Vallabh Government College’s legacy of nurturing disciplined and dedicated leaders for India’s defense forces. The achievement of these two cadets serves as an inspiration for future generations aspiring to serve the nation.
