A general meeting of the Municipal Corporation, chaired by Mayor Virender Bhatt, was held today. The session began with Councillor Hardeep Singh Raja commemorating the 66 Kuka Sikhs executed during the Kuka Movement on January 17-18, 1872, in Malerkotla, Punjab. The Kuka Movement protested against British policies promoting cow slaughter and called for boycotting government services, laws, and foreign goods. The members observed two minutes of silence in homage to the martyrs.
The MC reviewed the progress of ongoing development projects and resolved to resume halted works immediately. For projects with tenders already issued, allotment letters will be dispatched without delay. Mayor Bhatt emphasized the need for timely completion of road construction, street lighting, water supply, sanitation, and other public services. Officials were directed to evaluate and restart all suspended works to ensure seamless service delivery to citizens.
Another significant decision involved the termination of 87 out of 189 approved positions in the corporation. The affected roles include beldar, plumber, gardener, mason, sanitation workers, and cartman. However, it was decided that vacant posts would be filled promptly to maintain the Corporation’s functioning. The Mayor assured that necessary government approvals would be sought for recruitment and funds for development projects. A memorandum requesting these funds will be submitted soon.
Additionally, the House unanimously approved the Revised House Tax Rules of 2024.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Mayor Madhuri Kapoor, Councillors Alaknanda Handa, Somesh Upadhyay, Rajender Mohan, Yograj, Virender Singh Arya, Sudesh Kumari, Suman Thakur, Dipali Jaswal, and others. Municipal Commissioner H.S. Rana, Additional Commissioner Vijay Kumar, Assistant Engineer Naresh, and Section Officer Rakesh Guleria were also present.
This comprehensive meeting aimed to ensure the corporation’s efficient functioning and accelerate the city’s development.
