MDU Rohtak emerge overall winner at women’s weightlifting competition

The All-India Inter Zonal Women’s Weightlifting Competition organised by the Association of Indian Universities and Himachal Pradesh Central University (CUHP), Dharamsala, concluded at the SAI Indoor Stadium today. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Jairam Thakur, was the chief guest at the event, while Dharamsala MLA Sudhir Sharma and Kangra MLA Pawan Kajal attended as special guests. University Chancellor Padma Shri Harmahendra Singh Bedi and Vice-Chancellor Sat Prakash Bansal were also present on the occasion.

Thakur, while speaking on the status of sports in India, said the country’s leadership was trying its best to promote it among the youth. Thakur expressed his concern over the increasing prevalence of drug addiction in the state and emphasised the importance of sports in eradicating the menace.

Programme chairman and Chancellor Bedi congratulated the university authorities on the successful organisation of the games, while VC Bansal called the event a kind of ‘sports Maha Kumbh,’ in which the daughters of India displayed their talent. He thanked the entire university family for making the event a success and said that such events could be possible only with the support of everyone. He talked about Bindiya Rani, who won a silver medal for India at the Commonwealth Games.

At the end of the programme, the winners of the 71, 76, 81, 87, and 87+ kg categories were honoured with medals. In the overall results, Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak, bagged the first place, Punjab University, Chandigarh, stood second, and Punjabi University, Patiala, walked away with the third position. They were honoured with trophies. Rani Nayak, who lifted 151 kg in clean and jerk, was awarded for her excellent performance.

Registrar and Sports Director Professor Suman Sharma, Dean of Student Welfare Professor Sunil Thakur, heads of all departments, teachers, non-teaching staff, researchers, and students were present on the occasion.
