The Regional Horticulture Research and Training Station (RHRTS), Jachh, in Nurpur yesterday celebrated World Soil Day with an event centred around the theme “Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage,”. The event was aimed to generate awareness about the critical role of healthy soil in sustainable agriculture, horticulture, food security and environmental conservation.

Sixty farmers from several villages participated in the awareness workshop organised by RHRTS on the occasion. RHRTS Soil Scientist Dr Renu Kapoor apprised farmers of the importance of soil health in ensuring quality food, food security and sustainable livelihoods.

The sessions aimed to equip farmers with knowledge to enhance soil fertility while minimising environmental impact through sustainable soil management practices like natural farming for maintaining soil health and boosting agricultural productivity.

Dr Kapoor said soil was a non-renewal resource, which demanded special care and attention. “By adopting natural farming practices, farmers can protect and nurture the soil for future generations,” she said.

Demonstrations on innovative tools and methods for reducing soil erosion, enhancing organic matter and balancing soil nutrients were also held by horticulture scientists.

RHRTS Associate Director Dr Vipan Guleria highlighted the significance of soil health, stating, “Healthy soil is the foundation of life on Earth… It is vital for producing nutritious crops, combating climate change, and maintaining biodiversity. Through events like this, we aim to inspire communities to adopt sustainable practices that nurture our soils.”

In order to encourage environmental stewardship, RHRTS distributed fruit and medicinal plant saplings to farmers, urging them to plant trees at their residences as a step toward sustainable living.

The awareness workshop concluded with a commitment to boost soil conservation and sustainable agricultural practices.
