Mandi, September 2
Following a violent attack on trainee doctors by seven persons, authorities at Sri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College and Hospital in Nerchowk, Mandi district, have called for strengthening security measures. In the wake of the assault, which occurred on Saturday night, the college administration has urged the district police to set up a permanent police post on the campus to ensure security and safety of staff and students.
Demand police post for swift action

The incident has caused significant concern in the medical college community. The attackers not only physically assaulted trainee doctors but also reportedly attempted to run them over under their vehicles. The assailants fled the scene after threatening the doctors with further violence.
Prior to this assault, there had been troubling signs of harassment at the college. A few days ago, a youth was reported making inappropriate comments towards female students outside the girls hostel, raising alarm among the medical college’s staff and students.
In response to the recent violence, DK Verma, Principal of Sri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College, emphasised the urgent need for enhanced security. “We have urged the district police authorities to set up a police post inside the medical college campus. This will enable prompt police intervention in case of any further incidents, ensuring a safer environment for our doctors and staff,” he said. He added that the existing security measures were being reviewed and strengthened. “We will be asking our current security agency to improve their presence and vigilance on campus to prevent such incidents in the future,” he added.
The police have already made progress in addressing the attack. Six of the seven assailants have been arrested. The local police are actively pursuing the fugitive and investigating the motive behind the assault.
The incident has cast a shadow of fear over the medical college, which has traditionally been seen as a secure environment. The call for strengthened security measures reflects the growing concern for safety among medical professionals and students.
