Solan, August 1
The Old Sanawarian Society, the alumni association of Lawrence School, Sanawar, recently organised a career counselling session on “Medicine as a Career”.
Over 300 students from classes IX to XII attended the counselling session. Four doctors addressed the young aspirants seeking a career in medicine.
The panel of doctors included Dr Sarvdeep S Dhatt, Head of Spine Surgery and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at PGIMER, Chandigarh; Dr Tarun K Batra, a cancer surgeon and Associate Professor at the Institute of Medical Science, BHU, Varanasi; Dr Esha Pai, cancer surgeon at EsTa Cancer Care, Varanasi; and Dr Manpreet S Sekhon, an ophthalmologist at Global Eye Hospital, Patiala.
Dr Dhatt talked about the qualities of a good doctor such as service, life-long learning and team spirit.
Dr Dhatt said, “In medicine, there are over 60 specialties along with opportunities in teaching, research and management.” Dr Esha Pai gave tips on how to successfully crack the highly competitive NEET examination.
Dr Tarun Batra talked about overseas opportunities in medicine, while Dr Manpreet Sekhon spoke on the numerous lucrative avenues that existed for doctors, both in the public and the private sector. An interactive session followed the presentations, wherein students asked questions pertaining to existing opportunities and challenges in the medical profession, including the ethical issues faced by medicos in the current scenario.
Proposing a vote of thanks, headmaster Himmat Singh Dhillon thanked Old Sanawarian Society president Pankaj Sapru for organising the counselling session. — TNS
