Mandi, November 27

Normal life was crippled in Lahaul and Spiti after heavy snowfall in different parts of the tribal district yesterday. Due to the snowfall in the region, residents of the Miyar valley were cut off from the district headquarters at Keylong.

Residents of the Lahaul valley said the entire valley had come under the grip of cold wave after the snowfall. Water pipes had started to freeze in the morning hours. However, farmers of Lahaul Spiti, Kullu and Mandi districts were elated because snow is considered white manure for apple orchards as it maintains moisture in the land. Mohan Lal Relingpa, a resident of the Lahaul valley, said early snowfall was good for apple orchards in the valley, which was also becoming a hub for the fruit crop in the state. The timely snowfall was must for better production for agriculture and horticulture crops, he said.

Apart from this, several bus routes in the Lahaul valley were blocked due to heavy snowfall. The BRO restored Manali-Keylong road today for traffic movement and few private vehicles crossed the road. The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) has also restored bus service between Keylong and Udaipur. The Corporation has decided to conduct an inspection of Manali-Keylong road on Saturday to ply buses for the convenience of residents of Lahaul. Mangal Manepa, Region Manager of HRTC, Keylong Depot, said: “On Saturday, we will conduct inspection of the Manali-Keylong road, Keylong-Darcha road and few other link roads. If they are found fit, bus service would be resumed.”
