Monsoon losses Rs 539.17 cr in Kangra district; 50 lives lost
The ongoing monsoon season has caused extensive damage in Kangra district, with estimated losses standing at Rs 539.17 crore and 50 lives lost since June 20 this year.
Deputy Commissioner Kangra Hemraj Bairwa said the rains and landslides had also taken a toll on livestock and property. “At least, 50 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents while 171 heads of livestock, including cows and bulls, perished. The loss of human life is irreparable. The administration is providing every possible assistance to the affected families,” he said.
According to the official data, 110 kutcha houses were completely destroyed, while 819 suffered partial damage. Fifteen pucca houses were razed and 70 partially damaged. The rains also damaged 1,051 cow sheds, 50 labour sheds, kitchens, bathrooms, other structures and 28 shops, leaving several families homeless.
The Public Works Department (PWD) sustained the maximum losses worth Rs 28,647.07 lakh, followed by the Jal Shakti Department Rs 21,837.47 lakh. The Electricity Board reported damages of Rs 403.29 lakh, agriculture Rs 188.83 lakh, and horticulture Rs 2.91 lakh. The Dharamsala Municipal Corporation suffered losses of Rs 590.27 lakh, the Rural Development Department Rs 956.15 lakh and the Health Department Rs 280.77 lakh.
Bairwa said relief and rehabilitation were being given utmost priority keeping in view the devastation caused. “After the assessment is complete, financial assistance will be provided to the affected under government provisions. Departments have been directed to submit detailed reports so that reconstruction can begin without delay,” he said.
Appealing to the citizens to remain vigilant during the monsoon, the Deputy Commissioner said the District Disaster Control Room was operational round the clock. Residents could seek assistance by dialling the toll-free helpline number 1077.
