Mother-daughter duo drowns in Giri Khad

Both were washing clothes near the khad when one of them accidentally slipped and fell into the stream

In a heart-wrenching incident, a woman and her daughter drowned in the Giri Khad near Darbar village in Kotkhai tehsil of Shimla district, the police reported today. The victims have been identified as Kanta Sharma (47) and her daughter Mamta Sharma (30), residents of Darbar village.

According to eyewitness accounts, the two women were washing clothes near the khad when Mamta accidentally slipped and fell into the fast-flowing stream. Seeing her daughter in distress, Kanta instinctively jumped in to save her. Unfortunately, both were swept away by the current.

The tragic discovery was made by Kanta’s son and local villagers who reached the spot shortly after. Mamta’s body was found alongside the Khad, while Kanta’s body was recovered by residents after an immediate rescue effort. Police were informed and arrived promptly to take custody of the bodies, which were later sent to a nearby hospital for post-mortem examination.

Theog DSP Siddharth Sharma said a case under Section 194 of the BNSS, 2023, has been registered. He added that preliminary probe revealed no signs of foul play or injury. “As per current findings, both deaths appear to be accidental, caused by slipping into the Giri Khad while washing clothes,” he stated.

The incident has left the local community in shock, highlighting the hidden dangers posed by natural water bodies in hilly regions.
