“Mother’s milk is nectar for babies and breastfeeding is essential for a child’s healthy development,” said Birbal Verma, Public Education and Information Officer, Health and Family Welfare Department. He was addressing a gathering of women during the inauguration of World Breastfeeding Week celebrations at Chabutra village on Friday.
Verma highlighted that the first week of August is a significant period for mothers globally, as it is observed as Breastfeeding Week to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding, especially during the first six months of a child’s life.
He emphasised that breastfeeding plays a critical role in a child’s physical and cognitive development. It strengthens the immune system and protects infants from common illnesses such as diarrhea, pneumonia, respiratory infections, obesity and diabetes. Verma added that mother’s milk is easily digestible and packed with essential nutrients, making it the best nourishment for infants.
Importantly, he also noted the health benefits of breastfeeding for mothers. It stimulates the secretion of oxytocin, a hormone that aids in uterine contraction after childbirth, reduces the risk of postpartum depression and lowers the chances of developing breast and ovarian cancers, as well as heart disease.
The district-level Breastfeeding Day celebration was organised by the Health Department at the Anganwadi Centre in Chabutra, under the Primary Health Centre. The event was attended by Dr Praveen Chaudhary, Chief Medical Officer, along with other health officials and community workers.
