Kangra Lok Sabha MP Rajiv Bhardwaj flagged the demand of setting up a food processing unit in Nurpur in the lower Kangra region. While sharing more information regarding the matter with local mediapersons, Bhardwaj said he had raised the issue in the parliament on Tuesday under Rule 377.

He said he had urged the Union Food Processing Industries Minister, Chirag Paswan, to consider the demand as it would not only benefit fruit growers of Kangra but Chamba district, too. He said Nurpur was a fruit producing area in the lower Kangra hills and farmers grew mango, litchi, guava and citrus fruits here. “The establishment of a fruit processing unit in Nurpur will benefit thousands of fruit growers of both districts and ameliorate their socio-economic conditions,” he asserted.

Bhardwaj said the Nurpur region also had the potential to grow off-season fruits and this potential could be exploited after setting up the processing unit in the region. He asserted that if this long-standing demand of fruit growers was accepted it would also bring a revolution in horticulture in this sub-tropical zone in the state, besides generating numerous self-employment opportunities. He said he would also pursue this demand personally with Union Minister Paswan soon.
