Nagar Khel Kumbh kicks off
The Nagar Khel Kumbh event, part of the Khelo Bharat campaign, was launched at Paddal Ground, Mandi, yesterday. The event features three major sporting competitions — hockey, football, and wushu — and aims to encourage youth participation in sports, enhance their skills, and promote a healthy lifestyle.
The opening ceremony saw a large turnout of athletes and sports enthusiasts. The hockey competition was inaugurated by the chief guest, Virender Bhatt, Mayor of Mandi Municipal Corporation. The grappling competition was opened by Dr Yogesh Sharma, Deputy Registrar at Sardar Patel University, Mandi, while the football competition was inaugurated by Advocate Pal Verma, president of the Mandi District Council.
Chirag Thakur, State Coordinator of Khelo Bharat, highlighted that athletes from across the state are participating in the event. He emphasised that such initiatives not only inspire youth to engage in sports but also help in identifying and nurturing talent for national and international recognition. He further stressed that sports contribute to both physical and mental development while fostering unity and discipline within society.
Naresh Garg, District Coordinator of Khelo Bharat, called the event a crucial step in promoting sportsmanship among youth. He noted that the initiative provides a platform for players to showcase their talents and encourages them to aim for success on larger national and international stages.
