The Department of Geography at Government PG College Nahan, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (ISRO), Dehradun, organised a one-day workshop on “Advanced image analysis for geospatial professionals”. The training focused on the latest applications of remote sensing (RS) and geographic information systems (GIS), which are vital tools in planning, disaster management and sustainable development.
A total of 121 students and faculty members participated in the programme, which also marked the college’s recognition as an active Nodal Centre in Himachal Pradesh under the IIRS-ISRO Outreach Programme. This status enables students to access live sessions, interact with ISRO experts and gain exposure to cutting-edge geospatial technologies.
Scientists from IIRS-ISRO delivered lectures on AI, Machine Learning, Google Earth Engine, Python and advanced GIS platforms. Live demonstrations showed how these technologies are transforming image analysis for applications such as risk mapping, damage assessment and resource planning during disasters.
Coordinator Dr Jagdish Chand highlighted that the workshop aimed to bridge classroom learning with real-world challenges, while Officiating Principal Dr Dev Raj Sharma praised the initiative for enhancing both academic excellence and employability.
The event drew enthusiastic participation from students and researchers keen to apply geospatial tools in agriculture, tourism, regional planning and environmental studies.
