Narayana Guru transformed Kerala society, says Arif Mohammad Khan
Shimla, June 18
The movement started by Narayana Guru, a philosopher, spiritual leader and social reformer, transformed society and today an ordinary person in Kerala has a sense of dignity and equality, said Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan while chairing a discussion on ‘Singing the Faith: Bhakti literature in India’ at the International Literature Festival here today.
Narayana Guru’s message that “when Bramha dwells in me and Brahma dwells in you, how can you treat me differently” transformed society and led to harmony in Kerala, as people belonging to upper castes became his followers and gave up the practice of inequality, he said.
About the dignity of common people in Kerala, Khan cited the example of an interaction between the Chief Secretary and a driver in which the latter says, “I chose not to appear in the Indian Administrative Service exam as I love what I do”.
Khan has been engaged in writing since his student days. He is the author of the bestselling book, ‘Text and Context Quran and Contemporary Challenges’.
He actively writes articles and columns related to Islam and Sufism and have advocated abolishing the All India Muslim Personal Law Board.
