National Girl Child Day event held in Lahaul-Spiti

The Department of Women and Child Development organised a district-level function on the occasion of National Girl Child Day at the Tribal museum hall at Keylong, in Lahaul-Spiti district, today. Parul Katiyar, Project Officer of the District Rural Development Authority, was the chief guest at this event, while Lahaul-Spiti Superintendent of Police Mayank Chaudhary was the special guest.

The event began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the chief guest. Dr Banita Sharma, the District Ayush Officer, welcomed the chief guest by presenting her with a cap and traditional 'khatak.' The theme for this year's celebration was "Empowerment of Girls for a Brighter Future".

During her speech, the chief guest emphasised the vital role of girls in society, stating that without them, the very concept of a community is impossible. She highlighted education as the most crucial means of empowering women. "When a woman is educated, her entire family becomes educated, and by extension, the entire society becomes educated," she said. She further stressed that there should be no discrimination between sons and daughters, and girls must also be given equal opportunities for education. She urged people not to hinder girls' dreams and aspirations, emphasising that providing equal opportunities for women is a collective moral and social responsibility.

The chief guest also pointed out that National Girl Child Day serves as a reminder to discuss women's rights, as well as to raise awareness about violations of their rights, atrocities committed against them and the government's efforts for women's empowerment. She encouraged everyone to spread the message about government schemes and policies for women to ensure that all women become aware of their rights and benefit from available programmes. Additionally, she mentioned that although the sex ratio in India is lower than desired, Lahaul-Spiti has a higher female population.

District Programme Officer Sanjay Dogra provided information about the rights of girls, emphasising that women today are excelling in every field and proving their capabilities by working alongside men.

The event also included cultural performances by local children, who were later honoured by the chief guest for their participation. Following this, the chief guest viewed and praised the paintings created by children on the theme of the event.

District Child Protection Officer Dr Heera Nand, along with various departmental officials and women from local self-help groups, also attended the celebration.

The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of empowering girls and ensuring they receive equal opportunities for a better and brighter future in Lahaul-Spiti and across the country.
