Hamirpur: National Institute of Technology bags patent for motorised trolley to be used in hospitals

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) here has bagged a patent for a motorised trolley that will be instrumental in carrying oxygen cylinders in hospitals.

The patent department of the Central Government had granted the patent to the invention entitled, ‘motorised trolley for carrying oxygen cylinders in hospitals/ Covid centres’. A team of the NIT comprising engineers Rajat Anant and Mohit Anant, associate professors RK Jarial, Rajesh Sharma and PK Sood from the Department of Mechanical Engineering had applied for the patent.
Sood said the innovation was made during the Covid-19 pandemic challenging circumstances with funding from the district administration. He added there were multiple issues being faced by the medical staff on duty, concerning transportation of urgent medical supplies, especially medical oxygen cylinders within the hospitals or Covid centres by using a conventional mechanical trolley, which could handle only one oxygen cylinder at a time. Additionally, there was an acute shortage of medical staff to pull the drudgery of such a tool during emergencies.
He said that this product was designed and developed due to relentless efforts of the team members within a short span. The trial of the prototype of the trolley was successfully conducted in 2021 at the government hospital at Tauni Devi village in Hamirpur district.
Sood said the motorised trolley was low in cost, robust, easier to operate, allowed handy loading and unloading and was equipped with desired controllers, including speed control and a dual mode braking system.
It also allowed faster transportation of emergency supplies to patients and other stakeholders.
He added that the trolley would be of big help in the healthcare sector.
